Meervoude Reëls (Plurals)

Let’s make this simple. Read the explanation first, then use the examples to check your understanding.

Die reëls vir meervoude Table of contents 1. Kort klinker (Short Vowel) 2. Vokale (Vowels) 3. Kort vokaal +f (Short vowel +f) 4. Woorde wat eindig met “man” (Words ending in man) 5. Uitsonderingsreël – Exception rule 6. Twee vokale (Double vowels) 6.1. 🔵 Tipe 1: Twee dieselfde vokale 6.2. 🔵 Tipe 2: Twee verskillende vokale 7. Reël vir woorde wat op -ag eindig – Rule for words that end in -ag 8.

Deeltekens (ë) – What words get a ë? 9. Dubbel konsonante (Double consonants) 10. Dubbel vokaal/konsonant +f (Twin/double vowel/consonant +f) 11. Eindig met “heid” (Ending with “heid”) 12. Eindig op “ig” (Ending in “ig”) 13. Uitsonderings (List of exceptions) 1. Kort klinker (Short Vowel) As ’n woord ’n kort klinker het (soos die a in pan), dan verdubbel ons die laaste letter en sit 'e' aan die einde.

If a word has a short vowel, like the a in pan, we double the last letter and add 'e'. Kyk na hierdie maklike voorbeelde: Look at these easy examples: 🔹 pan – pan → panne 🔹 kop – head → koppe 🔹 vis – fish → visse 🔹 ster – star → sterre Maar… as die woord eindig op ’n d, doen ons iets anders! But… if the word ends in a d, we do something different! Dan verdubbel ons die 'd' en sit ‘ens’ aan die einde.

Then we double the d and add ‘ens’. 🔹 bad – bath → baddens 🎯 Onthou: ✅ Short vowel? Double the last letter + add e ✅ Short vowel + ends in d? Double the d + add ens Uitsonderings – Exceptions: Sommige woorde is net anders en jy moet dit leer. Some words are just different and you have to learn them. 🔸 kind – child → kinders 🔸 man – man → mans 2. Vokale (Vowels) Hierdie reël kan bietjie vaag voel, maar dis baie belangrik.

This rule can feel a little vague, but it’s very important. Jy sal amper altyd een van hierdie woorde in ’n toets of eksamen kry! You’ll almost always get one of these words in a test or exam! 🔵 As ’n woord eindig op 'e', 'i', 'o' of 'u', dan sit ons ’n afkapping ’s aan die einde. If a word ends in e, i, o or u, we add an apostrophe ’s at the end. Voorbeelde: Examples: 🔹 foto – photo → foto’s 🔹 skadu – shadow → skadu’s 🔹 radio – radio → radio’s 🔵 Maar met “a” is dit anders.

But with “a”, it’s different. As die “a” aan die einde beklemtoon word (jy sê dit hard), dan kry dit ’s. If the “a” at the end is stressed (you say it strongly), then it gets ’s. 🔹 ma – mom → ma’s 🔹 pa – dad → pa’s Maar as die “a” sag is en nie beklemtoon word nie, kry dit net ’n s sonder die afkapping. But if the “a” is soft and not stressed, it only gets an s, without the apostrophe.

🔹 ouma – grandma → oumas 🔹 sofa – sofa → sofas 🎯 Onthou: ✅ e, i, o, u → kry altyd ’s ✅ a → kry ’s net as dit ’n sterk klank is Dis ’n bietjie vreemd, maar jy sal dit gou baasraak! It’s a little strange, but you’ll get the hang of it quickly! 3. Kort vokaal +f (Short vowel +f) Hierdie reël is amper dieselfde as die reël vir kort klinkers. This rule is almost the same as the rule for short vowels.

Maar… as die woord met ‘f’ eindig, dan gebeur iets spesiaal: But… if the word ends with ‘f’, something special happens: 🔸 Ons verander die “f” na ’n “w”, en 🔸 Ons sit “we” aan die einde. We change the “f” to a “w”, and then add “we” at the end. Kyk na hierdie voorbeelde: Look at these examples: 🔹 gif – poison → giwwe 🔹 stof – dust / substance → stowwe 🔹 straf – punishment → strawwe 🎯 Onthou: ✅ Short vowel + ends in “f”?

👉 Change “f” to “w” and add we! Dis ’n cool reël wat jou sal help in toetse! It’s a cool rule that will help you in tests! 4. Woorde wat eindig met “man” (Words ending in man) Sommige woorde werk nie met gewone meervoudreëls nie. Some words don’t follow the normal plural rules. Hulle is uitsonderings, maar jy moet hulle ken – dit is belangrike kennis! They are exceptions, but you must know them – it’s important knowledge!

🔵 Dink aan lande en mense. Think of countries and people. Byvoorbeeld: For example: 🔹 French in Afrikaans is Frans. As jy sê Fransman, dan verander dit na Franse. Fransman (French man) becomes Franse. 🔹 English in Afrikaans is Engels. As jy sê Engelsman, dan verander dit na Engelse. Engelsman (English man) becomes Engelse. 👉 Sien jy die patroon? Can you see the pattern?
