Grade 8 Afrikaans FAL – Wat is Verlede Tyd? (Past tense)

Moodle Note / Section Marker

Inleiding:

In die verlede tyd gebruik ons “het” na die onderwerp. Ons voeg ook –ge voor aan die werkwoord, wat aan die einde van die sin staan. Byvoorbeeld:

Ek lees die boek.
Ek het die boek gelees.

In the past tense, we use “het” after the noun. We also add -ge before the verb, which must move to the end of the sentence. For example:

Ek lees die boek.

Ek het die boek gelees.

IF YOU ARE ASKED TO CHANGE THE TENSE:

  • Read the sentence.
  • Underline the verbs (This will tell you which rule to follow). It is always verb 1 that moves around.
  • Circle the conjunctions (if there is a conjunction, it means that there are 2 sentences, both of which need to be changed).
  • Put the infinitive in brackets (om + te verb) so that you remember to put it at the end.

A few useful tips when answering Verlede Tyd questions:

The following words change as follows when written in past tense:

is – was, for example: Die groente is vars – Die groente was vars.

  • wil – wou
  • moet – moes
  • kan – kon
  • het – het gehad, for example, Ek het ‘n groentetuin – Ek het ‘n groentetuin gehad
  • dis – dit was, for example, Dis vars – Dit was vars

If the verb begins with be, ge, her, er, ont, ver and mis, we get het, but NO ge in the past tense

If there is a conjunction in the sentence, we treat it like 2 separate sentences. (We do sentence 1 as if sentence 2 does not exist; we put in the conjunction, and then we do sentence 2 as if sentence 1 does not exit.)
