Wat op aarde is dit?
Let’s make this simple. Read the explanation first, then use the examples to check your understanding.
Play Video When we say what someone else said, we can do it in two ways: directly, by using their exact words, or indirectly, by using our own words to say what the person said.
It’s like telling a story in two different ways! Table of contents 1. Direkte rede 2. Indirekte rede 3. Wenke 1. Direct speech is when we say exactly what someone said. We use quotation marks (“ ”) to show the exact words.
Voorbeeld: Sarie sê: “Ek is lief vir skool.” Sarah says: “I love school.” We write the person’s name, a colon (, and then the exact words in quotation marks. Nog ‘n voorbeeld: Mamma vra: “Wil jy koek hê?” Mom asks: “Do you want cake?” 2.
Indirect speech is when we use our own words to say what someone else said. We do not use quotation marks. Sarah says that she loves school. Note: The word “that” (“dat” in Afrikaans) is often used in indirect speech.
Nog ‘n voorbeeld: Mamma vra of ek koek wil hê. Mom asks if I want cake. In indirect speech, the sentences sometimes change a little bit to fit the story. 3. Wenke Direkte rede: Gebruik presiese woorde, aanhalingstekens en ‘n dubbelpunt. Direct speech: Use exact words, quotation marks, and a colon.
Indirekte rede: Gebruik jou eie woorde, GEEN aanhalingstekens nie, en dikwels “dat” of “of”. Indirect speech: Use your own words, NO quotation marks, and often “that” (“dat”) or “if” (“of”).
