Are you ready for another exciting language adventure? Earlier, we talked about STOMPI and how it helps us build awesome Afrikaans sentences. Today, we're going to meet the sentence superheroes who connect everything: Voegwoorde!

(Conjunctions!) Stel jou voor jou sinne is treine. Imagine your sentences are trains. Wat doen treine as hulle bymekaar wil aansluit en 'n langer trein vorm? What do trains do when they want to link up and form a longer train? Hulle gebruik 'n koppeling, 'n voegwoord! They use a coupling, a conjunction! Wat is Voegwoorde? What are Conjunctions? 'n Voegwoord is 'n woord wat gebruik word om sinne saam te voeg.

It's a word that joins two sentences together, making them one bigger, more powerful sentence! Al lyk hulle dikwels kort en onbeduidend, het voegwoorde 'n groot invloed op die betekenis van die sin. Even though they often look short and insignificant, conjunctions have a big influence on the meaning of the sentence. In Afrikaans is daar drie verskillende groepe voegwoorde, en elke groep het sy eie reëls vir woordorde en leestekens.

In Afrikaans, there are three different groups of conjunctions, and each group has its own rules for word order and punctuation. Kom ons kyk na elkeen! Let's look at each one! Groep 1 Voegwoorde: Die "Bly-Dieselfde" Span! Group 1 Conjunctions: The "Stay-the-Same" Team! Hierdie voegwoorde is die maklikstes! These conjunctions are the easiest! Wanneer jy sinne met Groep 1 voegwoorde verbind, verander die woordorde in die tweede sin glad nie.

When you connect sentences with Group 1 conjunctions, the word order in the second sentence does not change at all. These are also known as neweskikkende voegwoorde, meaning they maintain an independent word order. Reëls vir Groep 1: Geen verandering in woordorde nie. No change in word order. Leestekens: Daar kom 'n komma voor want. Daar is egter geen leestekens voor en, of, of…

of, nog… nog, sowel… as, dog nie. Voorbeelde van Groep 1 Voegwoorde: en (and) maar (but) want (because) of (or) alsmede (as well as) dog (but/however) Kom ons oefen! Let's practice! Original sentences: Susan en Marie is nie meer vriende nie. Hulle is albei verlief op Spud. With a Group 1 conjunction: Susan en Marie is nie meer vriende nie**, want** hulle is albei verlief op Spud.

Notice how "hulle is albei verlief op Spud" stays exactly the same, just like in the original sentence! Original sentences: Sue se hande is vuil. Sy wil die haar hande was nie. With a Group 1 conjunction: Sue se hande is vuil maar sy wil hulle nie was nie. Again, no change in the second part of the sentence. Groep 2 Voegwoorde: Die "Skuif-die-Werkwoord-Vorentoe" Span!

Group 2 Conjunctions: The "Shift-the-Verb-Forward" Team! Hierdie voegwoorde is 'n bietjie anders. These conjunctions are a bit different. Hulle wil hê die werkwoord in die tweede sin moet dadelik aandag kry! They want the verb in the second sentence to get immediate attention! Die eerste werkwoord in die tweede sin volg direk ná die voegwoord. Reëls vir Groep 2: Woordorde in die tweede sin verander: Die eerste werkwoord skuif direk ná die voegwoord.

Word order in the second sentence changes: The first verb shifts directly after the conjunction. Leestekens: Groep 2 het 'n kommapunt (;). A kommapunt makes the reader aware of a pause longer than a comma, or indicates that a conjunction has been omitted. Voorbeelde van Groep 2 Voegwoorde: dus (therefore) daarom (therefore/that's why) gevolglik (consequently) nogtans (nevertheless) buitendien (besides) nietemin (nonetheless) Kom ons probeer!

Let's try! Original sentences: Fatty hou baie van kos. Hy eet baie tydens etenstyd. With a Group 2 conjunction: Fatty hou baie van kos**; daarom eet** hy baie tydens etenstyd. See how "eet" (the verb) jumped forward to be right after "daarom"? That's the Group 2 magic! Groep 3 Voegwoorde: Die "Werkwoord-aan-die-Einde" Span! Group 3 Conjunctions: The "Verb-at-the-End" Team!
